How to have a stress free moving day
We’ve helped a lot of people relocate over the years, and we’ve gathered some top tips on having a stress free moving day along the way.
Use good quality boxes
You can’t beat good, strong, double-walled purpose-made removals boxes. Your boxes of possessions will be moving from house to truck, stacked on top of other boxes, travelling, being unloaded and then put into the right room.
If you’re packing your own boxes, don’t forget to parcel tape them on the bottom, as well as the top. It sounds obvious, but it’s an easy thing to forget!
Label your boxes
One really good way of doing it, is taking a pack of coloured paper and assigning each room in your new house a colour. Tape the corresponding colour paper to the top of the boxes for each room, and write down the contents. This will make it super quick when unloading your boxes, for anyone helping you move to know which boxes are going in which rooms – especially if you put a bit of coloured paper on the door of each room, too.
Having the contents clearly written will help you as well, no-one wants to be digging through mystery boxes looking for cereal bowls that are in a random box in the bedroom at 7 o’clock in the morning!
Don’t be scared to budget for a removals firm
It might be an expense you um and ahh over, and obviously we’re biased, but hiring professionals can really make for a stress free moving day. Especially as we’re so used to doing it, we can have your boxes loaded on the truck and unloaded at your new house extremely quickly. Having someone to do the heavy lifting while you get to do the fun stuff (drinking tea and deciding where your favourite chair is going to live), makes for a much more fun experience.

Pack a moving day survival kit
There are few cups of tea nicer than the first one in your new home, but you could end up sipping it out of egg cups if you’re not careful! Pack up a bag with things you might want straight away like:
- Mugs/ glasses
- Tea/ coffee
- Sugar
- Teaspoons
- Prosecco
- Celebratory biscuits
- Kettle
- Tea towel
- Washing up liquid
- Hand soap
- Toilet roll
If you’ve got people helping you move, it’s also a good idea to put someone else in charge of remembering to get milk – it might not be top of your list on the day.
Have an important document box
One of the biggest jobs when moving house is changing your addresses on things. From passports and driving licenses, to bank details and magazine subscriptions. If you can gather all your important paperwork that you might need for this into one place, and keep them with you, you’ll be saving yourself a job later, as well as the stress of remembering where you put the box.
Things to keep the children amused
If you’re moving with children in tow, they might want to help while actually being more of a hindrance. A really good way to keep them amused, is to pack them a bag with their favourite toys and activities. When you get to your new house, you can set them up in a quiet corner with their goodies, and it’ll give you some time to think.
